recent projects Updated March, 2007
Since June 2005 when I started freelancing as a user interface designer, I have had the opportunity to lead the design for eight RIAs, rich internet apps.
The newest projects in my portfolio include an extensive re-work of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's internal fundraising application and designs for start-up companies in Texas, Michigan, and California.
Fluid Innovation: From Work Flows ---> Development Specs
Fluid Innovation Group works with companies and institutions to transform their internally developed software into commercial products, which are then sold through independent software vendors.
They approached me in January '07 to lead their UI design effort. I mapped the work flows for the primary users, designed wire frames and delivered the form & behavior specs for development. I am currently collaborating with their coding team while designing their next module.
AutoGuide: Informal Usability Review
AutoGuide provides a web based version of their print publication for used car sales. I was informally requested to perform a review of their existing web application.
With a few terminology and screen layout changes, the entire application would be more user friendly, resulting in a substantial increase in the number of potential buyer to dealer communications.
The full review is available for download (4.2 mb).
troove: From Usability Review ---> Wire Frames
troove is an all-in-one search appliance that allows users to locate and navigate enterprise application data, such as Oracle Applications, using a familiar web search interface.
I just started working with this team in February to build out an incredible data visualization tool. That's all I can say for now- other than this will change the way people gather and analyze data.
An NDA prevents me from showing any actual screen designs.
d3View: Usability Review and Recommendations
d3VIEW is a web based tool that extracts information from a LS-DYNA produced d3hsp file and presents it in a concise, user-friendly format.
Even though I don't have a background in finite element simulation- I knew I could help make the design more usable. I evaluated the existing beta application, and presented wire frames with the new recommended workflow and screen designs.
An NDA prevents me from showing any actual screen designs.
LargeSmall Systems: From Personas ---> Wire Frames
LargeSmall Systems is a funded, early-stage company creating a
disruptive media and content technology with many interesting
applications.
Rob Jones and I started working with the team in early January and established a metaphor for the design based on the primary user types, and provided low fidelity mockups.
An NDA prevents me from showing any actual screen designs.
FiveRuns: From Wireframes ---> To Launch
The CEO of FiveRuns, Steven Smith, approached me last year about designing their 'new breed of systems management software.' The user interface was the top priority. And since they wanted to offer a Web 2.0 product, the design should utilize the powerful interactions and effects available through Ajax.
I started working with the team in January '06 and completed the design specs in March. Scott Boms from Wishingline took over the visual design, and FiveRuns released their beta version one month later, a true testament to the efficiency of designing the UI up front (and, of course, to developing with Ruby on Rails). RedMonk called it 'an application whose UI, workflow, and general approach to systems management is fantastic' (RedMonk, Aug 2006)An NDA prevents me from showing any actual screen designs
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: User Research ---> UX Advising
The Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization. They needed a comprehensive web app for CRM, event planning, donor development and patient services.
To date, the application is under development based on our wire frames and interaction design. Catalyst Resources is currently handling the on-site UI development.
ERN Portal: Design ---> Through Development
Last June I had the opportunity to design the interface for the new portal version of the ERN Systems, a suite of tools for Emergency Response Networks that has been used by the Texas Fusion Center, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security.
The most challenging aspect of this project was the size and scale of the application; there are four modules that must work seamlessly together or independently. Navigation, consistency and efficiency were my primary areas of focus while designing the interface, as well as cleaning up the aesthetics.
Aware Media Inc: Evaluation ---> Design ---> Test
In early April of 2005, I was approached by a start up group in LA who were building a social networking application. I was asked to evaluate the current prototype and create a new design. Paper mock-ups, wireframes, and story boards ensued. In July, my sidekick, Alan Baumgarten, and I headed to LA to conduct the user testing. Based on feedback from over 30 users, we simplified the design further and handed the specs off to a development team in Russia.
